Update: With Adrian Peterson (high ankle sprain) doubtful for Sunday’s game against Atlanta, Gerhart is likely to take over Minnesota’s top running back role.
Recommendation: Lorenzo Booker will get some work, particularly in passing-down situations, but Gerhart was drafted by Minnesota specifically for this scenario. He lacks Adrian Peterson’s explosiveness, speed and balance (who doesn’t?), but Gerhart is big and strong enough to project into a feature back role. He ran for 77 yards on 16 carries in his start against Chicago last year, and ran for 76 yards and a touchdown against Washington earlier in his rookie season. If he’s in your starting lineup this week, it’s ideally in a flex role.
